The Balmain Slim Black Destroyed Biker Jeans

31st August 2012
Just received my new pair of Balmain biker jeans from this season today. I finally did better and made up my choice on the wide range of Balmain jeans available. My first choice was initially the Black Moleskin Biker Jeans with side leg zips, and the Waxed Blue Pintuck Biker Jeans (read more). But after doing some extensive research, I found out that I am not in favour with like the Black Moleskin’s knee design, which has no Balmain ribbed details, if it did I would have chosen it instead. While the Waxed Blue Pintuck has some really weird wash strokes that is more obvious than I thought it wouldn’t be when judging it through SSENSE’s Slim Blue Biker non-waxed version. On the other hand I was about to commit myself on the high-priced Forest Green Suede Biker Pants, but suddenly felt that it would be too much of a hassle to maintain it (read more).

So finally last week, a Taiwanese friend of mine told me that there are some new Balmain biker jeans on FarFetch which are much significantly lower in price than all the other websites. I saw this pair of Black Destroyed Biker Jeans that I have not seen on LUISAVIAROMA for pre-order on Balmain Fall Winter 2012 collection. At first I was in doubt, because I never liked distressed jeans, but it grew in me and I felt it was really worth considering for the price and value, it was only $760 on FarFetch.

I bought it the next day and was in for a surprised. FarFetch sent me an email a few hours later stating that they couldn’t validate my credit card details because I was a new buyer and that the payment was higher than usual, the need to avoid fraud, blah blah blah… as if I just stole someone’s credit card and went off with the $18,900 Mastermind Rabbit Fur Flight Jacket. My billing and shipping address was the same, there wasn’t any problems when I use my credit card on other websites. FarFetch insist me that the only payment they would take from me now was through bank transfer, pretty dodgy. I requested to use another credit card or PayPal by payment, but they wouldn’t let me pay with those options. At this point I became skeptical, not sure why FarFetch is so persistent in requesting the customer to pay with bank transfer instead. I mean, do they want to get escape tax, or perhaps get away with credit card merchant fees? I checked my credit card statement and the payment I made with FarFetch earlier is still in processed. FarFetch stated that they did not take any money out of my credit card account, they said that it was automatically declined. I received several emails from FarFetch that they had cancelled and refunded my order, and will only accept bank transfer payment. When I phoned my bank, they told me that the payment is in the process of paying FarFetch since 25th of August till today, 31st of August. I was really upset with this order and I made a dispute with the payment requesting for a refund. Why on earth would FarFetch request a new customer to go through all these trouble. I was initially billed A$753.55 with shipping on the day I checked out, with bank transfer fees and the lower exchange rate since this week, I have to pay A$818.43 instead. What a horrendous shopping experience with FarFetch, I will never buy from them.
On the same day when FarFetch requested me that they would only take bank transfer, MR PORTER has just listed the same pair of Balmain jeans. I went ahead and bought it from MR PORTER instead even though it was much more expensive, at A$851 – including shipping. I have to say that MR PORTER never lets me down, I am always pleased and delighted when purchasing with them. The delivery speed is extremely fast and reliable, I didn’t manage to catch the parcel this morning, but after a short call with DHL Australia, I receive it after 30 minutes. The day when they released this pair of Balmain biker jeans, it was the day I made my purchase. It was a Tuesday night (Australian time) and it arrived today on Friday morning. I am more than happy to pay more for a service that doesn’t disappoint me. MR PORTER definitely won me as a loyal customer, I highly recommend everyone to shop with MR PORTER. With it’s 24/7 customer support, wait-list reservations on sold out stocks, personal assistant, stories, wide-range of selections, express shipping with detailed tracking, custom tax and duties included at checkout price, free pick-up returns, full credit refund or store credit options, staff that knows what the customer wants, – even a fussy customer like me can’t ask for more.

Reminiscing About Christophe Decarnin’s Last Collection

29th August 2012
There is just something about the Balmain Fall Winter 2011 collection that I really love about. I think about it almost every week, almost more than a year it continues to grow in me since the day I discover that I fell in love with the brand. Till today, I am still in search to purchase most of the Fall Winter 2011 collection that I have not yet acquired. Most of the items that I am looking for are the key popular pieces that were sold out within a month.
Model is wearing – Balmain Khaki Used Corduroy Jacket, Balmain Light Khaki Wolf-Print Cashmere Scarf, Balmain White Wolf-Print T-Shirt, Balmain Dirty Blue Biker Jeans, and Balmain Khaki Suede Ranger Crepe Sole Boots
Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Dirty Blue Biker Jeans – I never wear blue jeans, it’s not part of my current style. But I am still in search to purchase a pair of classic blue biker jeans from Balmain. I’m afraid that there is nothing perfect from the current Fall Winter 2012 collection. I don’t like the destroyed bikers from this season, the cutting doesn’t appeal to me as I am more suited for skinny fit than slim or straight fit biker jeans. However this particular Balmain biker jeans encapsulates everything I love about the brand. It is the perfect biker jeans by choice for me. The less saturated blue, seasoned washed tones with dirty distressed finish, a timeless classic everyday jeans with some amazing biker details that I could foresee myself wearing it with pride. I need this, does anyone know where I can find one in a size 30?
Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Khaki Corduroy Biker Trouser – Golden brown corduroy biker trousers, probably one of the best colours I can think about matching with my Balmain Khaki Suede Ranger Boots. Current season colour are, dark blue and waxed red or bright red in corduroy material.

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Oversize Breton Stripe Long Sleeve Cotton Top – Red and white or blue and white striped long sleeve cotton top made from heavyweight cotton. This is the perfect casual top for the weekends with a hint of naval héritage. I usually match my breton tops with a thick peacoat, casual blazer, or a brown leather jacket. Theres one very identical red breton top like Balmain from Topman at the moment, A$43 only, how tempting.

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Navy Peacoat – Navy wool peacoat with six large golden buttons, two front pockets, quilted lining and a large collar and lapels. This is a very sharply tailored thick wool peacoat that has an impeccable military style. Probably one of my all-time favorite navy peacoat till today. Whenever I see someone wearing it downtown, it makes my heart goes sour that I didn’t get it.

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Zipped Cotton Hoodie – Grey hooded jersey sweater with zips at either sides, cuffs zips and top zip with two front pockets. This heavy metal details on the hoodie give the sportswear staple a tough edge.

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Military Jacket – Golden military embroidery sleeve lace, military applique collar style with classic military pockets, as worn by Kid Cuidi. This is an outstanding jacket, I didn’t like it at first, felt that it look like a rented costume, not until I tried it in person at Harrolds. Suddenly at that moment, I felt the urge that I must have it. I am still looking for this jacket till today, I know that there is one in a size 46 on eBay now, but it is too small. I need one at least in a size 48 or 50. Does anyone know where I can find one? I saw a Russian Instagramer who has it in my size, unfortunately he wouldn’t sell it to me no matter how hard I begged him. Lol.

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 3D Worky Denim – Dirty washed blue jeans, this pair of jeans runs two-three sizes bigger than true size. I live in regret now for not purchasing it during the sales period. Now it is impossible to find one in my size. =(

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Long Green Tibetan Yak Wool Scarf – Oversized scarf made from Tibetan yak wool. It takes one worker a month to spin 2kg of yak wool from 300kg of raw material, just enough to make two oversized scarfs. Fetch one on eBay if you can still find it, the current season has no yak wool scarfs from Balmain.
Balmain Fall Winter 2011 White Wolf-Print T-Shirt – Light weight regular cut t-shirt, extremely soft and flexible cotton. I missed out on the wolf-print t-shirts, but they are still available on the Balmain e-store at the moment. I will probably go with grey version instead of white as it is a more versatile colour.

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Black Leather High Ranger Boots – The moment I saw these high military boots, I knew it was meant for me. I felt that there is no other military boots out there that can match this design, they are either too short or too tacky.

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Khaki Suede Ranger Boots – Rare and hard to find moc-toe Balmain boots. I love this since I saw them at Harrolds, Sydney. I didn’t try them at first as I was initially looking for the Balmain Black Leather Ranger Boots (above) at that time. I was very happy that I get a chance to buy them on eBay for a really good bargain. Read more about this story here.

Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Beige Cashmere High Socks – Glad I bought two pairs of these cashmere high socks late last year. They are completely sold out now everywhere. Not the most comfortable socks in the world though, it feels quite strange but keeps my feet warm during the winter months.

Me wearing Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Suede Ranger Boots, with Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Beige Cashmere High Socks, with Arthur Galan Fall Winter 2012 Slim Dart Detail Pants, with Hugo Boss Black White Cotton T-Shirt, and CK Calvin Klein Spring Summer 2012 Crop Blazer.

My Balmain purchase earlier this year at Harrolds, Melbourne – 2x Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Beige Cashmere High Socks, and Balmain Fall Winter 2011 Black Leather High Ranger Boots

The Balmain Forest Green Suede Leather Biker Pants

26th August 2012
This is part of my Balmain planned purchase from the Fall Winter 2012 collection. I didn’t like it at first when I saw it at Vertice London, which did an early pre-order release of this pair of suede leather lamb skin biker pants. It has an uneven shade of tone patches because of the natural suede finish. But it started to grew inside me, and I love it ever since. If you are tired of Balmain’s signature waxed or distressed jeans like me, this is a new option to choose from. A less ostentatious version of the shiny black leather biker pants, a quietly unique biker pants with great sense of character. This lamb skin biker comes with 4 zips, both front and both back which Balmain only makes on the ‘Destroyed’ jeans – also known as the classic Chistophe Decarnin Balmain Biker Jeans. Besides 4 zips only currently exist on the newer biker jeans or pants that Olivier Rousteing design, which has no ‘ribbed’ details on the knee =(.
I love this because it has the best of everything Balmain can offer in one. It is hard to come by such a beautiful design made from such a rare material that other designers wouldn’t use frequently. How often do you find suede lamb skin pants in store which were created by talented Parisian designers – in men’s version?
If you are as interested as me, you will probably find yourself making a very difficult decision before purchasing this pair of biker pants. Here are a few key points that I have been questioning myself about, my primary and secondary research has satisfied my curiosity.
  1. Maintenance – The outer material is suede, 100% lamb skin. It has a surface that is prone to absorb liquid and dirt. This pair of biker pants needs careful inside out detailed inspection to maintain it’s ‘mileage’. Plan ahead before you wear them out, check the weather as water can shrink and damage leather. If caught on a rainy day, lay a towel on the floor and place these ‘wet’ biker pants flat as hanging them can cause the weight to stretch, let it dry without any contact with sunlight or direct heat as quick drying can cause leather to crack. Leather needs to breath, be sure that the area is ventilated as humidity can cause internal damage on leather, placing them in a plastic suit bag can also cause leather to dry and develop cracks eventually. Use baby wipes to remove any stains, if there are tough ones the only way to get rid of them is by dry cleaning but I would suggest to avoid dry cleaning leather products at all cost as the chemicals could wash off the original colour finish and cause it to age quicker. Also avoid kids holding ice cream running around blindly at all cause!
  2. Size – This pair of Balmain green suede biker pants fits true to size, but take one size down. Leather will eventually stretch after a few wears, just like leather shoes that will eventually expand. I would recommend to buy one as snug as possible, as long you can hook the front. I am a size 30, and I tried this in a size 29, it fits me perfectly. Do not buy size 30 if you are size 30, it will expand to be around size 31-32.
  3. Slim Fit or Straight Fit – There are two significant different fits of the same design and price. Do inquire with the store about the cut if you are deciding to purchase it online. Photos don’t do justice most of the time, it is hard to accurately judge whether it is slim or straight unless the store has provided that information.
  4. Summer/ Humidity – It is already the end of winter in Australia, we live in the reverse season. It will not be possible to wear this out when it is 30 celsius above, not unless you wear them in a air-conditioned shopping center. The material is quite thick and heavy, like 2x Balmain jeans material in one. Imagine wearing a leather jacket that is made out of the same material as a luxury car leather seat, you get the idea. However this would be great for winter as long it doesn’t touch snow, snow = water which will damage it.
  5. The Green – You might be very confused what sort of green this finish is. There are a handful of photos that I showed on my previous post, but non of these references could accurately describe it as one judging by the eye in person, not even the photos below that I could confidently say it is that green. The green is not that light or pale, it is dark but not that dark towards black. I can recommend that this is a safe and acceptable green to go with, it is not an odd colour that has gone terribly wrong.
  6. Value – Everyone has different perspectives of value. From my opinion I would say that for the price it is worth buying this pair of Balmain leather biker pants, but not as first time buyers of Balmain. If you are a fanatic with 5-10 pairs of Balmain jeans and pants in your closet, then this is a MUST HAVE. You should not miss out on this as I doubt Balmain would repeat this design and fabric in the same colour and cut in the future.
  7. Price – $1300-$1800 USD. I wouldn’t pay anything more than $1600 USD, you can buy two pairs of new Balmain biker jeans or pants on websites like Mr Porter, LVR, FarFetch. etc. instead of one that you could hardly wear. Not unless you decide to buy and trash (fully use and discard) this pair of leather biker pants. I doubt that there would be a good resell value after used, the price is very steep and buyers would rather pay for a new pair of Balmain biker jeans or pants from the future collection than an overpriced used old biker pants. So I would conclude it is not possible to get back the same return on investment compared to other classic biker jeans.
