Balmain Spring Summer 2015 “Army of Lovers” Menswear Campaign

6th January 2015

It was inevitable that Kim Kardashian and Kanye West has been nominated as the new face of Balmain Spring Summer 2015 menswear campaign. A much larger Balmain Spring Summer 2015 womenswear ad campaign was just released a month ago featuring supermodels from Adriana Lima, Joan Smalls and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley.

However Creative Director Olivier Rousteing knew that the mandatory seasonal ad campaign needed more than just supermodels. After all consumers these days aren’t easily driven by brand engagement. Therefore omnipresent pop-culture celebrities Kim Kardashian and Kanye West would make a blazing lasting impression of the Parisian label in memories of consumers to come. Balmain knows that this will certainly have a major influence in brand engagement and participation as consumers are more likely engaged with personalities associated.

I am somewhat not completely shocked and had foreseen the West family would eventually dominate the Balmain campaign, and you should not be surprise to see them again in the near future. Rousteing has a close friendship with the couple and has seen him frequently dress them in the latest Balmain runway ready-to-wear collection since they were also long-time supporters of the brand, and more often Rousteing admires Kim and Kanye as the modern “icons” of his generation.

The 28 year old designer says for this menswear campaign, the initiative was “to capture a moment of love” — the Army of Lovers. “Kim and Kanye are style icons and friends. It is an honour to have them in this Balmain campaign. Together, they represent love, beauty and diversity — they are the new modernity. This is more than a campaign, it expresses something beyond clothes — it is a celebration of love and friendship. This is a new statement for Balmain.” Rousteing mentioned in a release about the campaign.

Kim and Kanye showed passion without fear for each other in the campaign project, one of the most powerful ad shows the “Kiss of Connection” – featuring Kim dressed in a Balmain Caged Contrast Sheer Stretch Viscose Jersey Top, and Kanye wearing his Balmain Double Breasted Wool Gabardine Jacket ensembles by the famed French fashion house. One of my favorite ads out of all exhibits a horribly wrecked matte black McLaren MP4-12C supercar, with Kanye dominating the ad with his all-time trademark Balmain look – yes we’ve seen him with the same look here, dressed in his satin lapel double breasted jacket, a Balmain Sleeveless Tank Top, but this time with Balmain Ribbed Leather Biker Trousers instead of sweat-leather trousers.

While the others looks showcases the edgy oversize leather ponchos in a contrast striped and more prominently the precious Navajo hand-beaded variant that retails over $35,000 and is now available at the Balmain webstore. The campaign was photographed by Mario Sorrenti and is set to debut worldwide in leading magazine from March 2015 onwards. Balmain Spring Summer 2015 Wishlist

10th December 2014

Rousteing’s high-priced circuit rush sportswear was very evident in Balmain Spring Summer 2015 menswear when Luisa Via Roma launched the new pre-order collection a week ago. A refreshing string of intensified mono and colour block with striped panelled geometric looks grappled the designer’s distinct trademark. I would say roughy 50% of pure Balmain still resembles in these outfits, but heavily subdued in comparison to the previous Balmain Fall Winter 2014 glamazon boys safari collection which reference closely with the formalities. Yesterday’s harden militant, rock ‘n’ roll, and playful chic biker looks that we got used through the years along with luxury and elegance is dead in the water for now. Shop the Balmain Fall Winter 2014 men’s end of season sale at SSENSE while you can.

Aesthetically, it was a welcoming change to a look due for a bit of evolution, but don’t expect subtle changes here for the upcoming fleet of spring summer sportswear inspired wear, as most of the entire collection has been revolutionized. Olivier Rousteing’s is expanding the creative limits of a thriving Parisian menswear driven solely through a fantasy theme and directed through an established paradigm, he also mentioned earlier that the current collection was more of ‘him than ever’. It was difficult to determine where the energies had been spent on this partisanship collection which lacked the Parisian house’s emphatic signature.

Sadly to say, there are certain pieces you should definitely avoid buying at all cost! As I have heard many horrific opinions expressing equal disappointment towards the collection, in particular the sweat-series with drawstring feature that resembles the likes of childrenswear, such as the Balmain Navy & Red Double-Breast Embroidered-Badge Hooded Sweat Jacket and Balmain Navy & Red Contrast Panelled Biker Sweatpants. These pieces may look edgy at a first glance, but truly speaking, they look far less polished compared to the outgoing leopard and camouflage series. Further common criticism includes the earth-shattering shift, an overambitious future-seventies sportswear proposition that is insignificant to our time and lacks general desirability. Learn more about the Balmain Spring Summer 2015 menswear collection.
Despite this, there are some pretty cool two-tone, tri-tone variants worthy of a second look as the complementary monocolor blocking illustrates an iconic statement. Here are some of the most desirable of its kind, the Balmain Two-Tone Contrast Teddy Varsity Leather Jacket – an exquisite style-proof college jacket that will likely be acquired by a myriad of celebrities and fervent admirers in the upcoming Spring Summer 2015. Pair this jacket with the matching Balmain Black Two-Tone Contrast Panelled Biker Leather Pants to complete a magnetic aesthetic. One of my favorite tops available in Luisa Via Roma that I am seriously considering to get is the Balmain Two-Tone Striped Contrast Jacquard Button Detail Sweater, it has an exaggerative monoblock knit arrow striped panelling across that initiates a divine visual effect along with its brand distinct shoulder button detailing.
And how could can one not find love in the classic denim biker jeans category? I’ve found one of the sports inspired series quite to my liking, yes its true that I find it quite attractive, the Balmain 17cm White Two-Tone Contrast Striped Panelled Denim Biker Jeans is what I am looking at, it has a minimalist approach with classic stain details that will add a refreshing edition to my current Balmain denim biker jeans collection. If you want a denim biker jeans that speaks from this collection, then the Balmain Yellow Tri-Tone Contrast Striped Panelled Denim Biker Jeans is for you, this mustard yellow racer is selling out quick compared to the red and blue variant, though it sort of resembles a ‘Kill Bill’ jumpsuit and somehow reminds me of the nostalgic Lego bricks. These are probably some of the best examples pieces you can buy from Luisa Via Roma’s Balmain pre-order collection that includes the seasonal sportswear adaption while retaining likeable formalities. Surprisingly, there is an absence of the Navajo beaded embellished jackets that I was looking forward to.On a positive note, there are a few supreme pieces that share common features with one of the current hottest Parisan labels at the moment. The Balmain Black Lace-Up Detail leather Biker Jacket with its excessive lace strings details looks like a pick-up from Hedi Slimane’s womenswear and Balmain 17cm Light Blue Destroyed Stretch Denim Biker Jeans with knee ripped certainly portrays an aggressive charm that questions the similarity of referencing Saint Laurent’s rock ‘n’ roll cowboy’s trademark aesthetics. As for the rest, well it’s forgiven. I love ‘part’ of this collection because of its drastic changes, yet hate it for how it could some of the designs be associated with such a prominent brand. Either way, it is going to be bought by people who will enjoy wearing these seasonal pieces and will be loved by those who are willing to accept its imperfections that money can buy. Balmain Fall Winter 2014 for SENSE Magazine Japan

26th November 2014

Japanese fashion publication SENSE Magazine has recently unveil it’s exclusive bi-annual editorial for Balmain Fall Winter 2014 menswear. The Japanese men magazine is highly recognized to curate the finest features of individual labels in trending fashion. The recent label dedicated editorial showcases a handful of prominent Balmain ready-to-wear from Olivier Rousteing’s current ‘Glamazon Boyz’ collection, a theme inspired from the beauty of Peter Hill Beard’s East African memories with a wild cocktail mixed of safari elements. Checkout the official Balmain Fall Winter 2014 Lookbook captured by Karim Sadli.

The editorial collection boost an eye-catching Balmain Camouflage Print Safari Jacket that is currently only available online at the Balmain webstore, this essential piece of African safari outwear dressed in camouflage print is one of the key items of the label’s Fall Winter 2014 seasonal collection. The distinctive safari camouflage jacket is paired with a tasteful dark Balmain Intrecciato Woven Denim Biker Jeans in waxed finish, a key reworked biker denim design that was offered in the earlier Balmain Spring Summer 2014 menswear. While finishing off the look with the all new Balmain Leopard Calf-Hair Skate Sneakers for a chic and playful look.

Other distinct pieces includes a frisky Balmain Leopard Calf-Hair Leather Varsity Jacket that resembles what celebrities would wear, a generous range of serious drop-crotch biker sweatpants and to my liking the Balmain Black Knit Sarouels, the good old Balmain 16cm Blue Dirty Denim Biker Jeans, and this season’s iconic Balmain Khaki Suede-Panelled Padded Down Jacket. It is unfortunate that the magazine did not feature the highly prized Balmain Khaki Camouflage Suede Racoon Fur-Trimmed Hooded Jacket instead, as the menswear label is often highly regarded with its fur-trim extravagance jackets during fall winter season. It is interesting to observe how the French label brand has revolutionize throughout the years since the Christophe Decarnin era. From what was used to be Balmain biker and military skewed leather and denimwear has translated to a grace of fashion savvy street-style and sweatwear, Rousteing has definitely played well, though retaining most of Decarnin’s efforts that has formed the label’s crucial identity, Rousteing’s creative twist in utilizing former core elements with innovative design techniques has certainly diversified the brand’s offerings. Balmain Blue Raw Stretch Biker Denim Jeans

7th August 2014

Most denim jeans you can buy these days have been pre-washed, pre-distressed and even pre-destroyed to alleviate the fabric material softer, further by reducing shrinkage and ideally to prevent the indigo dye from rubbing off. Raw denim or sometimes called ‘dry denim’ jeans are purely jeans made from denim that has not gone through the a pre-wash process.

The Balmain Blue Raw Stretch Biker Denim Jeans is not new in the biker game, made for Balmain Fall Winter 2014 menswear collection and much like it’s closely related sibling – the Balmain Blue Dirty Stretch Biker Denim Jeans, has returned to the shelves after it’s first initiation in Balmain Spring Summer 2014 menswear collection. This particular biker denim jeans fragments the same skinny-stretch silhouette at 16cm with iconic double front side pocket zippers, key distinction of ribbed-panelled knee caps and zipless open rear pockets. Market as the mid-tier segment Balmain biker denim jeans for men and much like the earlier Balmain Blue Dirty Stretch Biker Denim Jeans from Spring Summer 2013 has been transformed as part of a transitional season classic collection. Learn more about the Balmain Blue Dirty Stretch Biker Denim Jeans from Spring Summer 2013.

Because the fabric has not been pre-washed, the Balmain Blue Raw Stretch Biker Denim Jeans has a lot of loose indigo dye, it’s fabric is comparatively stiffer when wore the first few times in correlation with soften fabrics featured in it’s other brothers such as the predominant Balmain Black Washed Distressed Stretch Biker Denim Jeans and the more prominent Balmain Black Waxed Stretch Biker Denim Jeans. It takes a few regular wear to break-in and loosen up a pair, the deep blue indigo dye on the fabric is highly prone to colour transfers, it is easily rub off against anything that comes in contact, which means it will not be too kind on white leather shoes or even light coloured leather accessories pairing should be avoided.

Despite this, the raw blue indigo has a rich deep natural flavour that plays well against it’s sleek golden-orange high contrast stitching which makes the Balmain Blue Raw Stretch Biker Denim Jeans a real head turner. It’s casually aggressive rigorous material has been remodel with Balmain Homme’s ultimate signature biker outlook invented by the former pioneer Christophe Decarnin, executing an iconic casual elegant streetwear denim enhanced with a distinct stylish contouring. The Balmain Blue Raw Stretch Biker Denim poised a strong character and likeable desirability that is fitted for most Balmaniac who is looking to grow their personal collection, like me!

Sizing can be a bit of a trick, this is based on my personal experience as the French brand uses vanity sizing on their Japanese made jeans, unlike the Italian manufacturers that Balmain used once upon a time. It fits fairly large to size, which means while you may have a 32” waist, the sizing label on the denim jeans will state a size 30” just to make you feel better about yourself. This has not been a manufacturing defect or made by mistake as the irregular sizing has been known since the start of Balmain Fall Winter 2012, where the production of biker jeans has swiftly taken place in Japan.Take two sizes smaller for a close fit, or one size if you like to tuck in dense cotton shirts. Guide yourself with the Balmain Biker Jeans and Trousers Sizing for Spring Summer 2014, will update the latest Fall Winter 2014 size guide in a few weeks time or checkout my Balmain Fall Winter 2014 Collection Wishlist from Luisa Via Roma.
